Today's shave was like no other I will ever have again. I had just got back from seeing my wife Mary who was sent to hospice after her stay at Stony Brook Hospital. They did the best they could but mary was too weak to fight anymore. This video was done just prior to her death on September 22 a day before her 68th birthday. After pleading with my boss to let me work from home so I was not an hour and 35 min away she said no. She told me she didn't want to set a precedent. Mind you, I have been working for her for more than 8 years.
Here is the conversation I just had with my boss Jacky
Me - Hi Jacky, I know you’re aware of my situation. Mary is now in hospice, and we are waiting for her to pass. I would like to request permission to work from home during this difficult time so I can be closer to her instead of being an hour and forty minutes away.
I can continue handling all of my responsibilities for Cockpit USA from home, including answering the phones, and I will remain fully available throughout the workday. I would be very grateful for your understanding and consideration.
Jacky - Hi Don i do understand and would like to help but it’s an undetermined amount of time unless you have a doctors opinion. You have plenty of personal days to work with. That’s why we have such a “Rich “ plan of days.I can’t do both as not only does it put pressure on Nestor to have to open or Matt but it sets a precedent. If you wish to take a few days off I would understand. Please do understand. Plus if in fact Mary does pass you will no doubt need days for the funeral and to settle her estate. Thks!
Please keep in mind Lauren has a sick father now and could ask for the same accomodation..
ME -so please tell me how that situation affects me? I'm trying to figure out what you mean by telling me this
Jacky - It means I can’t set a precedent
Me - My wife is dying Jacky
Me - You know Jacky you can do whatever you want it's your company. You can make certain consideration and accommodations with your staff and you can bend the rules if you wanted to. I'm just very disappointed and your response.
Jacky - You seem to always be disappointed by anything I do if it doesn’t fit your request. I’m sorry to hear that. IF it were a finite time it might make sense. If it’s so important to be there why don’t you take time off.
Me - Because I don't have that many days left I'm trying to save the days since you are not willing to let me work from home I will have to go in tomorrow.
I was in my car at the train station it was about 15 min before the train would arrive and I got the call from hospice that Mary had passed.
On the last day we held a mass for Mary in the morning it's what she would have wanted. I get an email with the heading "Hope everything went ok this morning" My Boss writes "Sorry to bother you but could you give me procedure to get messages at main phone pls? Thks"
