Review - Viking Soap • Cosmetic / Citron Shaving Soap

Company: Viking Soap • Cosmetic
Product: Viking Shaving Soap / Citron
Founder: Andrew Hoiberg
Location: Ames, IA
Last week on twitter one of my followers had officially announced they had opened for business the Viking Soap Cosmetic company. The roll out included a line of Shaving Soap, Balms, Aftershaves and Body Soaps. I looked over shaving soaps and found these offerings Hedeby, Ironside, Old Norse and Citron which is the one I purchased and the basis of this review.

The packaging used with this soap is a plastic cobalt blue tub with a black screw on lid. A bright yellow label on top with the Viking logo right in the center. Two side labels are present the first allowing to easily read what’s inside if you happen to stack your soaps and the second with ingredients list website and company location along with how many ounces 5.5oz

When I first opened this soap I was expecting a bolder citrus statement so I was a little disappointed. I made the mistake of prejudging this soap before I used it. I'm pointing this out because I don’t want anyone to make the same mistake or you’ll be missing out on a wonderful shaving experience. The soap texture is that of a crop not as loose as a cream but not as hard a soap. Let me list the notes of the soap as it’s described on the website. A fresh aroma of citrus and undertones of bergamot combine with menthol. Here is the list of Ingredients: Tallow, Stearic Acid, Water, Potassium Hydroxide, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera Juice, Glycerin, Castor Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Lactate, Mango Butter, Apricot Kernel Oil, Shea Butter, Fragrance, Hydrolyzed Oats, Lanolin, Menthol.

Creating a lather was no problem for Viking. I opted to use a lathering bowl but the tub had ample room to do the job. Once I added the correct amount of water I noticed a change in the scent, the citrus started to increase and linger in the den and I also notice a crisp menthol presents as well. The lather was able to provide great coverage on my face and held on to my 5-day growth extremely well. I started to notice something during the shave, a fresh clean pleasant feeling very invigorating sensation. I was thinking this is truly amazing. The soap provided excellent slickness and glide and the post shave feel was outstanding.

So as you can tell I’ve have a great shave with the Citron Viking Shaving Soap. If your looking for an outstanding performing soap this is the one for you. I personally look for shaving soaps with lanolin ever since I first used Mitchell’s Wolf Fat and I have to say this is on the same level of performance.
