Last week a surprise package arrived with something so out of the blue that it caught me off, guard. This product from Pereira Shavery is currently not available as of this writing. It was delivered to me for comments and reviews. This was not just a new bowl or brush this was a completely new brand for the company with its first offering being a new shaving soap and I’m sure more things to come in the future. The thing that sets this one apart is it has no charcoal which has been the key selling point to Pereira Shavery's original brand for years. The name of this brand is called Baron’s Choice and if it sounds like something you’ve heard before well it is, think Captain's Choice.
The packaging consists of a very bright yellow plastic tub you can’t miss it even with the lights out. The size and shape of this tub remind me of a soap called De Vergulde Hand. The opening is only big enough to load your brush, lathering from the tub although not impossible but would be impractical. The tub has a tab on one side that must be pulled for it to be opened.
This soap is a hard puck so it can be removed (with a little persuasion) and placed into a bowl but I opted to just load my brush.
The scent is the star of the show along with the absence of charcoal. I never mocked the addition of charcoal but never gained any benefits from it being in any soap I've used. We have the scent name of Water Blossom Aromatherapy which I do believe is used in one of the original charcoal offerings.
The lather was easy to produce, after loading the brush it was a snap to build a wonderful face lather. This got right into my six-day-old beard providing excellent coverage. The slickness and glide didn’t disappoint allowing me to go over trouble spots without the fear of irritation. My post-shave feel was a good one just wish I had an aftershave to go with it and continue the scent for a few more hours.
So I have a wonderful shave with Baron’s Choice and if the charcoal was something holding you back from using Pereira well now you have no excuse.
