For this shave, I brought out RazoRock Son of Zeus Italian Shaving Soap.
Even before building the lather, the presentation sets the stage. The black tub, dark label and fiery Son of Zeus artwork give the soap a bold appearance that feels right at home with its mythological name.
But packaging only gets a shaving soap so far. Eventually, the brush has to hit the soap.
Building the Lather
One of the things I enjoy about traditional wet shaving is watching a soap transform from something sitting in a tub into a rich working lather.
Son of Zeus gave me the opportunity to do exactly that. Loading the brush and working the soap into a proper lather is where you begin to get a much better idea of what a shaving soap has to offer.
For me, a good lather isn't simply about making something that looks impressive on camera. It needs to provide the slickness, protection and cushion necessary to let the razor do its job comfortably.
That's where the real test begins.
The Shave
Once the razor starts moving, you quickly find out whether a soap can back up its presentation.
During the shave I paid particular attention to the qualities that matter most to me: slickness, cushion, residual slickness and how comfortable my skin felt throughout the shave.
A shaving soap can have the greatest fragrance in the world, but if it doesn't perform when there's a blade traveling across your face, it isn't going to remain in my rotation for very long.
Son of Zeus made for a very enjoyable traditional wet shave and certainly gave me plenty to talk about during the video.
A Soap With Some Personality
I also think the name and presentation make this one fun.
Traditional wet shaving doesn't always have to be serious. Part of what keeps this hobby interesting is discovering different soaps, scents, razors and brushes and turning an everyday task into something you actually look forward to doing.
Son of Zeus certainly brings some personality to the shave den.
And with a name like Son of Zeus, there really was only one question left to answer:
Was the shave worthy of the gods?
You'll have to watch the shave to find out.
Until next time, enjoy your shave — and Have a Great Shave!
