White Lotus — A Shave Worth Slowing Down For
There are mornings when shaving is simply part of getting ready for the day. Then there are those shaves when you have the time to slow down, build a good lather, enjoy the fragrance coming from the brush, and remember why you got into traditional wet shaving in the first place.
White Lotus was created for that second kind of shave.
The inspiration behind White Lotus was tranquility. I wanted a fragrance that didn't have to shout to get your attention. Instead, it develops gradually as you build the lather and work it across your face.
It begins with the refreshing character of aloe vera, joined by the brighter and slightly invigorating quality of crisp ginger. It's a wonderful opening because it immediately gives White Lotus a clean, fresh personality.
As the fragrance begins to open, white tea moves into the center. This is where I think White Lotus really gets its calming character. The white tea softens that initial brightness and gives the scent an elegant, almost peaceful quality.
But I didn't want White Lotus to simply be a fresh fragrance.
Underneath those opening notes are cedarwood and warm vanilla. The cedarwood adds depth while the vanilla provides a creamy warmth without turning the fragrance overly sweet. Finally, lily adds a gentle floral quality that helps bring everything together.
The result is a fragrance that moves between fresh, warm, woody and softly floral without any one element completely taking over.
But How Does It Shave?
A great fragrance can get you interested in a shaving soap, but the lather is what ultimately matters.
White Lotus is formulated with ingredients including coconut oil, castor oil, glycerin, lanolin and shea butter, and it produces the rich, creamy lather that I want from a traditional shaving soap.
Give the brush a good load and slowly introduce water as you build your lather. You'll see it develop into that dense, glossy consistency wet shavers look for. The result is plenty of cushion and slickness for the razor, along with a comfortable post-shave feel.
And while you're building that lather, something else happens.
The fragrance starts opening up.
That's really the best way to experience White Lotus. Don't just smell it from the container. Put a brush to it, add some water, build the lather and give the fragrance a chance to develop.
More Than Just Getting Rid of Whiskers
One of the reasons I've stayed with traditional wet shaving for so long is that shaving doesn't have to be another chore.
A brush, a good shaving soap, a favorite razor and a little uninterrupted time can turn something we have to do into something we actually look forward to doing.
That's what White Lotus represents to me.
It's not supposed to rush you through your shave.
It's an invitation to slow down and enjoy it.
Wet the brush. Build the lather. Pick up the razor. Forget about everything else for a little while.
