Shaving With C.O. Bigelow

Shaving With C.O. Bigelow: A Classic Green Tube With a Story

This week’s shave features C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream. That familiar green tube has a traditional charm, but there’s more behind the name than its packaging.

C.O. Bigelow began in New York City’s Greenwich Village in 1838. Originally founded by Dr. Galen Hunter as the Village Apothecary Shop, the business was purchased by Clarence Otis Bigelow in 1880. That gives the brand a connection to neighborhood pharmacy life stretching back nearly two centuries. The date belongs to the business’s beginnings, rather than the introduction of this shaving cream.

Although the name comes from New York, the cream is made in Italy. Its eucalyptus and menthol combination gives it a fresh character and a cooling feel that fits naturally into a traditional wet shave.

Performance is where a shaving cream has to earn its place. C.O. Bigelow’s formula is designed to build a concentrated, creamy lather that softens whiskers and provides lubrication for the razor. It can be lathered with your hands or a shaving brush, making it accessible whether you’re just getting started or already enjoy the full brush-and-bowl routine.

For this week’s video, I’m taking that green tube from lather to razor and exploring what it offers during the shave. History makes an interesting introduction, but lather, glide, and comfort are what matter once the blade meets your face.

Have you used C.O. Bigelow, or is it a cream you’ve been meaning to try? Join the conversation and watch the shave on the Wet The Face YouTube channel.
