Barbus Active - 6 years later

The last time I used Barbus shaving soap was 6 years ago. A subscriber sent me a box full of products and wanted me to do a review of all of them. I reviewed all the products that pertained to wet shaving. But he was still not satisfied; he wanted me to just keep using them, and I tried to explain to him that it just doesn't work that way. Clearly, we had a language barrier since he was from Slovakia and had come to the US and landed in N.J. At the time, his website only had products from Barbus https://grujoskionline.com/ but now his pages are full of other products from different companies. I wish him well.

Barbus Active is the one I'm using today, and when you watch the video, I didn't bowl lather; I just loaded the brush from the plastic tub, and in less than a minute, the brush was loaded, and I was ready to face lather. Man, it produced some thick creamy lather that got read into the bread, allowing me to shave without fear of irritation. The post-shave feel was a good one as well. I would still recommend Barbus, and after six years, the same soap did not disappoint.

Barbasol 1919 - Wet The Face Review

Last week's review felt good, and it's been a long time since I did one, so I went to my local pharmacy to see what I could pick off the shelves to do another review. I found Barbasol 1919. I had never used it before, but if I did, I can't remember.

What I didn't know at the time of purchase was that this shaving cream does not lather... at all, so if you're waiting to see that this video is not for you. What you will see is an alternative to a lather shave with more slickness and glide, you're going to know what to do with. It has that by the truckloads. So, no brush is needed since I have demonstrated that in this video. All that is needed is a small amount on your fingertips and just rub it into a wet beard, and you're good to go.

I have to say the post-shave feel was very nice, even after using the alum block on my face after the shave, I could still feel the slickness left behind.

Island Man - Wet The Face Review

By now, I don't need to explain who the Stirling Soap Co. is. If you're a wet shaver, you already know. I've seen this company grow from humble beginnings in his garage, expand twice, and then move the whole thing again into much larger facilities. It's an incredible story I would watch as a documentary on Netflix.

Allow me to express that Rod no longer requires external reviews for his soaps. Despite his established presence in the wet shaving industry, individuals still engage in reviews. I am writing to you today due to a request from one of my customers. I recently created a shaving soap holder for my brand, Wet the Face. The customer who purchased one was delighted with it but expressed a desire for a holder that would accommodate his collection of Stirling Soaps. Consequently, I approached Rod and inquired if he had any spare tubs available. Rod, being a considerate individual, generously provided me with one. Upon receiving the tub, I noticed that a sample shaving soap labeled “Island Man” had been placed inside. Naturally, I felt compelled to create a review of this soap. Additionally, I was able to design a soap holder specifically for Stirling Soap, which the customer thoroughly enjoyed.

Shaving With The Perfect Cup

The creation of the perfect cup has been one of the most gratifying experiences in my product development journey. This accomplishment was achieved through numerous innovative concepts, including substituting real coffee for water, relying solely on coffee for its aroma and color, and incorporating coffee grounds into both the base and top layers of the soap. Initially, I was uncertain about the customer’s reaction to these changes. However, to my delight, they readily understood my intentions.

The selection of the appropriate coffee was paramount. I sought a local roaster with extensive coffee knowledge and expertise. By establishing a rapport with this roaster, I could provide detailed information about my process, and they could guide me in making informed decisions. After visiting several establishments, I ultimately chose South Down Coffee on Long Island, which now operates eight locations.

A Nordic Skies Shave

Today, we use Nordic Skies, which is a dupe of Drakkar, and I think it's pretty close if you ask me. I loaded the brush from the tub this time and had absolutely no problems. The lather was thick and creamy, allowing me to get really close with my Nano razor. I had no irritation, and the slickness and glide were great, and the post-shave feel was just amazing.

As the summer season progresses, I tend to think of the one I love, no, not Mary, I think of Frozen Lemon Ice. But I do love my wife.

Let's Shave With St James Of London

Today I reached for St James of London because it just works. I was sent this from a subscriber because when he used it he had a reaction to it, so he thought I would enjoy it, and I do. It's so easy to lather, I just took some in my fingers and massaged it into my beard, then I used my brush to just make sure it was in the beard. This soap has great slickness and glide, which allows me to use my razor without fear of irritation, and the post-shave feel was awesome.

Shaving With Cold Fusion

Summers are getting hotter, and combating this heat takes strategy. For this, I recommend Cold Fusion shaving soap and aftershave. This one is extremely cold, so cold that it comes with a warning. We don't use synthetic menthol like some other artisans do. This one does not creep up on you; this is full-throttle pure menthol crystals, and when you open the lid, you will see them on top of the soap. Over time, these will melt right in for even more menthol power.

Shaving With Solstice

When I was starting out in this hobby, I tried everything I could get my hands on, and then I came across Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements, or PAA, as they are commonly known. They have gone under different names, How To Grow A Mustache, HTGAM, but the owners stayed the same, Erik Hodges (aka Douglas Smythe) and Frances Towle. They sent me a shaving soap called Solstice, which is one of my favorite scents of all time. I honestly will never tire of this scent, for me, this does it all.

The soap base is that of his early work. Frankly, I find nothing wrong with it. Crown King is, I believe, his current base. I have been told it's a winner. I was to load the brush right from the tub and then make a fantastic face lather, which got right into the beard. This allowed for a superior slickness and glide, and the post-shave feel was a good one.

Today I'm using Faith Hope Shaving Soap, the HIM collection. This one is Key West, and as of this writing, it's no longer available on her website. The person I speak of is Deborah Bruijn. She was raised in San Diego, California, and is now a proud Southerner settling down in Alabama’s Gulf Coast in a beautiful, small, arts and craftsy town of Fairhope. She has a chemist degree and has worked for 10 years in the biopharma industry, took time off to have a family, and now has turned her talents to soap making. Shaving With De Vergulde Hand

Today I used the De Vergulde Hand shaving puck. If you never tried it, now's the time. It's an amazing shaving soap that has been around for over 450 years, and I'm not kidding. If a shaving soap has lasted that long and is still being sold today, do you think you deserve to try it?

I bloomed this puck in warm water for two minutes, then soaked up the bloom water with the brush and dumped the rest out of the bowl. This made for a very easy time lathering, and the lather went on thick and creamy. Plenty of slickness and glide for the razor, and the post-shave feel was fantastic.

Vintage Bay Rum & Plasma VS OLED

It was at the end of the day, and I needed to relax. I started setting up for the evening shave and came across my Vintage BayRum Generations. On the label, you can see a picture of many generations, all at the kitchen table. The father is passing down the traditions of wet shaving to his two children, just as his grandfather did years ago.

I'm not sure Bayrum has this effect on everyone, but it calms me down, and that's exactly what I was trying to do with this shave. I lathered up with it using a bowl, of course, and it created a thick creamy lather that got right into the beard. I used my single-edge razor and cut through 7 days' growth with ease. This had plenty of cushion and glide, providing an irritation-free shave.
The aftershave of the same scent was applied, and I couldn't have been more relaxed.

Palmolive Stick Shave & Tylenol

Today, I need a quick shave, which is why I am using the Palmolive shaving stick. It is fast, easy, and effective. The scent is pleasant, and it is one of my favorites. It provides excellent smoothness and glide, and the post-shave sensation is always positive.

Regarding the Tylenol mentioned in the title, I recently watched the Netflix series “The Tylenol Murders” and recalled the news coverage of the incident years ago. It was a concerning period for individuals who could not use aspirin, as no alternative was available. Consequently, all bottles of Tylenol were removed from drugstores, and it took a considerable amount of time for them to be reintroduced.

Let's Do A Wool Fat Shave

Hey, I had an idea today. I thought I’d try a wool fat shave, but guess what? The wool fat shaving soap is discontinued, and prices are going through the roof! But here’s the good news: I still have my original puck! I bought it ages ago, and it came in a ceramic bowl and lid. I will show you how to use it to load the brush and then create a rich, creamy face lather.

Here was my course of action: Bloom for 2 to 5 minutes, take your brush and soak it in the bloom water, next use the bloom water to wet your face with it, then discard the rest. Now load the brush with the soap until it is full, and make a face lather. I have to say I'm going to miss this soap when it's all gone.

A Package From Pacific Shaving Arrived

So, Last week, a package arrived for me and it was from Pacific Shaving. I was surprised when I opened the package to see a natural cork-handled synthetic brush. It was so light that I had to get used to it, but I quickly developed a new technique.

Next in the package was a 7 fl oz Natural Shaving Cream, which states that a little goes a long way, and that statement is very true. It's a low-lather vegan shaving cream, but I found it to produce plenty of lather for my taste. This has plenty of slickness and glide, and the post-shave feel leaves your face feeling very smooth.

Shaving With Proraso Green or is it White?

I was sent this Proraso from a subscriber in Italy. This shaving cream is one of the best I've used. Its performance will never let you down. I always use shaving cream when I need to get the job done because I'm either tired or in a rush to do something else. This time, I was feeling a bit tired.

My prep was to wet the face, apply the cream onto a wet brush, mix it by hand at first, and then face lather, and this went off without an issue.

The feel and scent of the cream are amazing. I highly recommend it; the menthol is just perfect, not too strong but not weak, just the right amount. The post-shave feel needs to be experienced. I would recommend using an aftershave of the same product.

Shaving With Unforgettable

One of my favorite scents is Wet the Face, unforgettable. It's right up there with Thomas Shelby Signature scent. When it was first released, it sold out in 2 hours. I still can't get enough of it. This amazing scent is a woody blend of tobacco, amber, and oud, complemented by fresh notes of mandarin and bergamot.

The aftershave was the perfect ending to this shave, enhancing the scent to last a few hours past the shave was perfect.

Let's Shave With Proraso

Today I use shaving soap which I always pronounce wrong, so I won't say it, but it's called Proarso Red. I also used the plastic tub it comes in to load the brush and then do a face lather. This method never fails, and what a lather it makes. Some people have a problem with the scent, but I find it very pleasant. It goes on thick and rich, providing complete coverage, and the slickness and glide are always ready to help the shave along. The post-shave feels fantastic and is ready for an aftershave.

This week I only had time for one movie, which is Talk to Me (2023) is a supernatural horror film from A24, directed by Danny and Michael Philippou. The story follows a group of teenagers who discover they can communicate with spirits using a mysterious embalmed hand. When they hold the hand and say, "Talk to me," they allow a spirit to possess them for a short time, providing an intense and thrilling experience. However, when one of them breaks the rules and stays connected for too long, a terrifying chain of events is set into motion, leading to horrifying consequences.

Shaving With Brutis

If you ever wanted to shave with the scent of Brut, then Burtis is the shaving soap for you. I tried to make this as close to the original scent as possible, and I think I succeeded. Along with its great scent, this soap has lots of lather, and the post-shave feel is fantastic.

The one thing that is missing is the big bar soap, I think it was called soap on a rope. I'm going to try to make this. I'm not sure I will make it on a rope, but the bar will be big.

Shaving With Nothing But The Base

Today I felt like using nothing, nothing but the base. I had this bottle of aftershave, Spices From the Sea, which smells like Old Spice. I didn’t have any of its shaving soap left, so if I use a soap with no fragrance, the only thing that you will notice is the aftershave.

This strategy seemed to work out perfectly once I was done with the shave I quickly applied the aftershave and presto Old Spice. I have to say it's a good match to the original. Sadly as I explained in the video I'm having an awful time getting everything I need to make this scent I may not be able to reproduce it again for a while both the aftershave and shaving soap are now out of stock.

Shaving With Cool Cologne Shaving Cream

Looking for something I hadn't used in a while, I found Cool Cologne. The first time I used this was in 2017, and the last time was in 2021. This is a shaving cream from the UK, I believe, and when I used it for the first time, I was impressed by the amount of menthol in the product.

Since I've had this one tube of shaving cream for over 8 years, the formula will start to break down. The one thing you could notice is the lack of creamy texture to the paste. It was unfortunately very dry and needed a boost of water. This led me to try a bowl lather, but that just didn't work out as planned. So I placed a large amount in the brush I was using, kept it wet as I could, and started a face lather. This turned out to be what was needed and I got the shaving cream to come back to life I even noticed the menthol was present. As it turns out I had a great shaving and would use this again but I don't think I'll be waiting eight years to try it again.

Shaving With Speick

Today I'm happy to be shaving with Speick a shaving stick I thought I lost. This one is a notch above Palmolive in scent but when it comes to performance they are the same both are great.

As I said in the past now that I have the skill set of using the stick I always apply it correctly and this went on with no issues. Once I started the face lather it didn't take much effort to create a wonderful thick lather that got right into the beard and provided superior slickness and glide.

The razor I started with was the MagT. The one thing about this razor is its aggressiveness. I love the way it looks and the way it holds the blade with powerful magnets I can even stand the substantial weight but the aggressiveness was just too much for me and my face. I gave it the old college try but needed to swap it out for Occam's Razor.

Shaving With Arko Stick

I knew when I went back to work it would only be a matter of time before I caught a cold 10 days to be exact. Everyone was sick before I returned and the flu was going around the office in the two months I was out. I was lucky not to get that I just got a common cold. But others were not so lucky some of them had been out close to two weeks and when they returned they looked weak.

I have the advantage of not being able to smell anything and thought this was a great time to use the Arko stick. Not a big fan of the scent and since I can't smell anything it was perfect timing.

Shaving With Modern Barbershop

This week, I am getting back into the routine disrupted by working from home for two months. I have to admit I didn't want to go back to getting up at 4:00AM and heading to the Penn station so I could open at 7:30AM but this is my reality so I do it until I don't have to anymore (Very Soon).

That brings me to shaving with Modern Barbershop and to shake things up a bit more I'm using the Rockwell T2 DE adjustable on setting 2 and the rarely used Skull brush. A crazy combination but it worked great.
