The packaging reminds me of what James Bond would reach for if he needed shaving cream it has that type of look to it that you might find in Bond’s shaving den.

I sometimes forget to revisit things I’ve enjoyed reviewing in the past. I came across one that falls into this category called Dr. Jon’s Flowers In The Dark I believe this was released around Halloween in 2019. The art on the label is pretty impressive and the description of the scent is a little disturbing when I first read it. It’s a play on lavender but it read something like this and I quote “Lavender upfront but then fades and all that is left is a coffin wood and ozone, a disturbingly pleasant combination”

As we inch closer to 2021 which could not come any quicker if you ask me I’m getting more calls to do reviews from product manufacturers which tells me companies are more confident that we're moving in the right direction. I also just got word that Fine will be releasing the new line called 21 Century Shaving Soap. This will be interesting comparing it to the original classic formula.

Today I’m using something from Wickham Shaving Co. Called 1912 Cashmere. This scent is just fantastic Top Notes: Bergamot, Basil Leaf, Heart Notes: White Patchouli, Base Notes: Oak Moss. My tub has been dormant for some time and needed blooming to wake it up and that seems to do the trick because it lathered up so well like it was brand new.

Our last holiday offering this year is Mr. Warlock which is based on the cartoon Santa Clause is coming to town. This scent is a wonderful blend of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and camphor that has to be experienced. Not as strong as our Cold Fusion but it does pack a punch and adding the aftershave will complete the ending to a terrific shave.

We always try to make the holidays release something special. This year we brought back Christmas Time and came out with Silent Night which was a big hit but now the holiday field is getting crowded. So we have decided to remove Mr. Warlock from our lineup next year so we can give way to a whole new set of holiday releases which I hope will be a hit with you as well.

My question is could these be the same blades as Polsilver Double Edge Razor Blades Super Iridium my guess is yes but I'm going to ask WizaShave for that answer.

Just before I was doing this week's shaving video as I walked into the den I noticed a leak coming from my commode and it was a disaster. Running for towels 7 to be exact I manage to locate the source of the problem. One of the problems was time because everything breaks over time the trick is to be ready for it I wasn’t.

Years ago I purchased a modern flushing device that allowed for a selected amount of water to be used. It worked amazingly instead of a handle it was a button you pushed. Now that several years later this is no longer available so much for the advancements of water conservation. This means I now had to take the whole commode apart including separating the tank and replace it with a kit I found at home depot. Two hours later and with lots of frustration I was able to continue with my YouTube video.

There are only a few products I find that should be in everyone's wet shaving den and one of them is Ingram shaving cream. This underrated cream is by far the best bang for the buck I’ve come across in a very long while. A gift from a Youtube supporter this tube had changed my opinion on drug store shaving products but let me make this clear, not every product performs like this one. Here in the US, we won’t find it on our shelves since this is only sold in the UK but you can get yours on the internet at 8-10 dollars it has been said in the UK it sells for 2 - 5.

About 3 years ago I received a package from Crown & Crane which was overflowing with product samples and the one I decided to use first was Musique Nuit (Night Music) little did I realize the shaving soap was intended for a woman. I could have deleted the video or made something else but I decided to go with it. Below is the complete reckoning of my experience.

Today I’m watching more movies and TV than ever before and not having anything new to review in the wet shaving world this week I thought it was time to do shaving and talking video about just what shows I’ve been watching lately. For this shave, I will be using my Frozen Lemon Ice during the talk which for me is becoming one of my favorites so much so that I intend to come out with a Bar soap and aftershave balm soon.

Before the shave starts I usually go over the tools or hardware I’ll be using and this time I wanted to mix things up a bit so I took out the biggest brush I own. This is a Frank Shave brush which was given to me by the company. The funny thing about this brush it's like a vacuum with lather. No matter how much is made you wind up with it all in the brush and I demo this in the video so it's worth watching just to see this happen. Next, The razor I normally use is the Occams Razor Nano this time I reach for a razor that has been the most viewed on my Youtube channel the QShave or MinShi clone of the Merkur Futur Safety Razor. I’m not sure how the real razor performs but the clone is very aggressive and this time I dialed down the settings to 1 1/2 which the last time I tried this was set on 3 and it nearly killed my face.

Last week a package arrived for review and inside was an aftershave from Fine something I’ve never seen before called Latigo which means whip in English. One could conclude that this aftershave might sting back when applied so I was very eager to give this a try. 

Fine has some of the most elegant bottles for their aftershaves they had been the ones to start the trend moving away from flask bottles and into the current ones they now have and everyone seemed to follow suit. The most interesting thing about this bottle it has sort of an inner shell. If you look closely you will notice the aftershave is almost suspended within the bottle it adds something very interesting to the overall look no matter what’s inside.

A few weeks ago on Instagram, I was contacted by Roman the owner of Wiener Schurken from Austria. The company name in English translates to Viennese Villains. He reached out to me regarding his product Strawanza a masculine fragrance that was released not to long ago. He was looking for me to do a review and asked if I would be interested. After we spoke awhile and he filled me in on his company I agreed and waited for the product to arrive. After a few weeks, I started to wonder if he ever sent me anything and had kind of forgotten about it. Then he contacted me again, asking if his package had arrived. I told him, no, and after some investigative work on Romans part, he found out it was due to customs that it was being held up but after another week the package was delivered and I was more than ready to do the review.

For me, one of the best times of the year is Autumn with its trees all turning colors a fantastic showcase of what the best mother nature has to offer and where I live not too far away is Cold Spring Harbor. People used to come from all over with empty water jugs for the free natural spring water provided by the town.

The way into town is Harbor Road its winding road that cuts right through the forest with beautiful homes to the left and right with one of the most scenic natural lakes surrounded by a forest of tall Pines, Maples, and trees of every size and shape. It’s here that I always visit during Autumn and its what I thought about when creating my new shaving soap release.

Last week an unexpected package arrived at my door. I’ve been getting more of these lately almost like things are starting to get back to normal getting packages for reviews. One of them was from Captain's Choice. Scott has released a new set of Aftershave, Shave Balm, Shaving Cream, and Shaving Soap called Land Ho! and man it's a winner.

I only received the aftershave and when I open the bottle I connected with the scent right away. Like I've said in the past the Captain doesn't' actually like to spell out the notes list to the scents he likes to get the feedback from the users and let them make the list but I'm getting confusing messages from the website. The shaving soap says citrus upon a background of lavender while the description for the aftershave says a classic Fougere scent with customer feedback suggesting citrus clean, fresh, tropical edge with tobacco leaf to grapefruit. I personally agree with the tobacco leaf profile. I found this aftershave pairs well with my Cuban Tobacco so that’s what I used for this shave.

When I first got mine it came in a ceramic shaving bowl which I think is part of the allure of the product. You have to love the packaging the box looks like it hasn’t changed since the original soap was made back in the ’30s and changing it now would be a big mistake due to its iconic nature. This soap is lovingly referred to as MWF in the shaving community.

When you think of Palmolive the first thing that comes to my mind is dishwashing liquid. I remember the commercials of the woman soaking her hand in it at the beauty parlor that was back in the 70s. I never really knew about the shaving cream until I started to wet shave and someone sent me a tube of it to try. Just like the commercial I was shocked to find out just how good it was too.

Sometimes companies will make their products slightly differently in other countries. I was sent a tube of Palmolive from Italy called Rinfrescante al Menthol the scent is different and the addition of menthol was the icing on the cake for me the packaging was basically the same, however.

Wet The Face - What's On The Horizon

I wanted to touch base on a few things going forward at Wet The Face. I wanted to let people know of some additions and some returning favorites for the Fall and holiday season this year. 

First up we have FaceBook 1K Returning after a long hiatus. This was released right before covid19 and it was an amazing release with having it sell out within 2 1/2 hours. It was pretty amazing. Both the shaving soap and aftershave will be returning the aftershave balm will be a little later on still waiting on labels for that. If all goes well this will be added to the product line all year round.

Straight Razors & The Art Of Shaving

When it comes to straight razors they've always had this certain appeal to me. Ever since I found wet shaving I feel the straight razor users are at the top of this hobby. 

It takes skill which has to be learned over time because you can do damage to one's face let's be real here this is a dangerous method of shaving considering the options we have today.

They come in all types and with different Grinds, Points, Notches, Materials like Stainless Steel, Carbon, Swedish Steel the list goes on. You also have to be aware of what comes along with being a straight razor user the caring and maintenance of which is just as involved. 

I plunged into straight razors early in wet shaving and had joined a group on honing. We gathered in the summer where we had some very well known YouTuber’s all at picnic tables trying their hand at creating a sharp edge on Gold Dollar razors. I had my bag of stones like everyone else and we had personal lessons from some of the top straight razor users. I was doing pretty good not great but pretty good and even when we all left I would practice what I learned for a few weeks more. 

Mason Boutique - Vivian A Second Look

I remember back in early 2016 I spoke to Jenny Marting from Mason Boutique. I told her how I loved the artwork on her products and wanted to review one of her shaving soaps. After some emails back and forth she agreed and I wrote that review which still gets plenty of traffic. Her soap gained so much attention it raced right to the top of many wet shavers lists but that was 5 years ago and so much has changed since then.

Today you can’t buy these shaving soaps under Mason Boutique nor can you buy them under the Brushguy Etsy store which was her husband's brush shop that’s because they have become what I think you can say exclusive with two companies. How do I know this well it says it right on the brush guy website under a banner which reads Brushguy is taking a short break Note from Shop Owner Feb 12, 2019 “I am now making brushes for West Coast Shaving and Strike Gold Shave.” which I would assume the shaving soaps would most likely follow suit. Which means you can still buy Mason Boutique its just under a different name.

Pre Shave & Shaving Cream (Red)

When it comes to Proraso products the sandalwood always comes to mind. This was one of the first shaving creams I’ve ever purchased. I have nothing bad to say about it some find it harsh on the skin due to the fragrance oils they use but that’s not the case for me it works perfectly. When it comes to the pre-shave I’ve tried it once awhile back so I think I’ll give it another go and see if my scores and my opinions have changed any.

Player One Turns 60 - SOTD

 I remember back in 1972 when I first saw the odyssey game console I was 12 years old. This was the first commercial home video game console on the market. My cousin had one and I would beg him all the time to play. For each game you would need to place these plastic sheets over the TV screen this would produce the static background graphics which the console couldn’t create and then you needed to insert a credit card like game cartridge into the console slot. At the time it was just magic to me but now of course things are a lot different and far more realistic than ever before.

Two weeks ago way before the holiday, Frank from Strike Gold Shave informed me he had a new shaving soap he wanted me to review and explained he was sending it out but unfortunately it never arrived and we missed the opportunity to review this on July 4th. So today I’m happy to say its finally here and we're taking a look at Honest Abe the new release from Strike Gold Shave.

This is a standard 5oz tube with a screw-on lid but you have to love the great picture of Abraham Lincoln that was used for the label and something I never noticed before was the addition of the side label which most likely had been on other tubs before.

With the summer upon us, I thought it would be a great idea to move up the release date a bit on our new Frozen Lemon Ice. Heaven knows we could all use a break from everything going on not to mention the sweltering heat.

I have to say, I enjoyed the process of creating this packaging design I even tried to create a little something from the movie Frozen which I hope you noticed. It was just a fun way to get the point across.

For this scent, I took the essence of tart lemons and mix it to perfection with a menthol. This tart lemon scent is spot on if you have lemons at home just cut one open and compare.

King C. Gillette Safety Razor

To be honest I didn’t even know it was released until I was asked to review it. I’m talking about the King C Gillette Safety Razor. Maybe 50 youtube subscribers asked if I could do a review of it. So after the requests kept mounting I took a ride down to my local Walgreens which is the only place that is selling them. As far as I can tell you can’t get them from Target or CVS or any other place other than Walgreens which is fine by me because we have one about nine miles away. Once at the store I found it right away due to the big display they had showing them off.

The packaging is stunning and well thought out. It instantly told you something special is in the box. The design seemed to capture the period of the first razor and yet look modern at the same time. It even had a signature of King C. Gillette on the side but after looking at his real signature this was not the same as what was on the box. Inside you find a package of 5 blades and the 3 piece razor. Cap, Base, Steam all perfectly chromed. I found no instructions for the first time user on how to load or explaining proper usage of the razor which I think was an oversight on Gillette’s part. It seemed they had a target audience in mind which was the established wet shaver and knows what a safety razor is and how to use it.

Barbus Sports Shaving Cream / Prestige Aftershave

About 8 months ago I reviewed a few products from Barbus they had been sent to me by a friend in N.J. who represents the product line. I’m reaching back into the box and pulling out the last few products I will be reviewing. Today we are going to be using Barbus Sport Original Shaving Cream and the aftershave Prestige.

The packaging for the shaving cream is the typical tube but not having a flip top is a drawback for me. The Prestige aftershave comes in a beautiful 100ml black mat finish bottle. It reminds me of Dakar, not the scent just the finish.

The sport scent of the shaving cream reminds me of sport scents on the market today. fresh clean with nothing new to talk about. The scent of the aftershave smell nice but has a strange dry down but still smells nice.

Baron’s Choice - Pereira Shavery

Last week a surprise package arrived with something so out of the blue that it caught me off, guard. This product from Pereira Shavery is currently not available as of this writing. It was delivered to me for comments and reviews. This was not just a new bowl or brush this was a completely new brand for the company with its first offering being a new shaving soap and I’m sure more things to come in the future. The thing that sets this one apart is it has no charcoal which has been the key selling point to Pereira Shavery's original brand for years. The name of this brand is called Baron’s Choice and if it sounds like something you’ve heard before well it is, think Captain's Choice.

Lodge 49 - Wet The Face Release

I’m not one on watching tons of TV you can count the shows I watch on one hand but when I find something I like I'll tell people about it. Lodge 49 was one of those shows. AMC describes the show as follows: "A modern fable set in Long Beach, California about a disarmingly optimistic local ex-surfer, Dud (Wyatt Russell), who's drifting after the death of his father and collapse of the family business." In the first season, Dud joins a fraternal order known as the Order of the Lynx, hoping the Lodge can put him "on the path to recover the idyllic life he's lost." I just got hooked on the first episode and never stopped watching. Then after the second season, it was announced it was not coming back for a third. Each episode in this series is a step into what the big picture is all about but now I’ll never get that answered. Hopefully, another network will pick it up so we can continue the journey but until that happens I created this complete set of products in honor of the show which includes shaving soap, aftershave, bar soap, and aftershave balm.

Once again we are reaching back into the lost soaps and today we are unwrapping a small sample size from Crowne & Crane. This one is tobacco & amber.

On first look you can see that it been some time since its seen the day of light. You will notice the wrapping has been discolored but amazingly the scent is still with the sample and speaking of the sent I’m just not getting Tobacco and amber it seems more of a powdery scent to me but maybe when we lather it will change.

In 2016 going on 4 years ago I did a review on Spring Fresh from Passionately Natural. That happened to be one of my favorite shaving soaps at the time and I remember I was given two tins and the other was called Mossy Woods. I have forgotten about that soap until I saw my spring fresh video again and I went back looking for it and found it in a box with other shaving soaps I hadn’t use it a while. I found so many other things in the box that I can do a few reviews with things I just had forgotten about so let this be the first one. 

Captain's Choice - Nor' Easter The Complete Set

In February of this year, I did a review on the Captain's Choice Nor Easter aftershave and I was really hooked on the scent but when I asked Scott for the shaving soap he told me he was still working on it. Well, three months later I get to use the complete set of Nor Easter scented products Shaving Soap, Shaving Cream, Aftershave, Aftershave Balm, and let me tell you they didn’t disappoint. The star of the show is the scent. Scott doesn’t like to discuss the scent on his website nor over emails so I’m just going to leave you with this bit of information many have said it's reminiscent of a very famous cologne. That being said I don’t really care I enjoy it and if you enjoy it that’s what matters.

I received an email a few weeks ago from Edwin A Juarez from “The Daily Shave” telling me that a package would soon arrive and the contents would be shaving bowls for review. I was expecting wood or ceramic but wow these are made of stainless steel and let me tell you how awesome these shaving bowls are. Patrick Ryan has been working on them for customers for a while now and currently his creation is undergoing a second revision which should be ready soon. I have the first rev coming in at 1.8 oz these stainless steel bowls are as light as a feather so light it’s hard to believe they're made of stainless steel and so compact for travel as well.

Around September of last year, I started to create what my line of new products was going to be for the new year 2020. I knew I wanted to do some Ralph Lauren scents and sent out to the testers a few ideas. When they all came back with notes and opinions the one thing they all agreed upon was Polo Sport which I call The Sport Of Kings. it was clearly in agreement that this should be in the lineup and so here it is. It’s not often that fine releases something new but once they do everyone starts talking about it. Aquamarine the collaboration with West Coast Shaving is the new Fine release everyone is talking about and man what a debut. In the first week it was released you could read about it in just about all shaving communities and for good reason it’s fantastic!

I was surprised of how lightweight the white plastic tub they use is. It's very thin plastic and the top seemed to pop off without any effort. I’m always looking at Fine as a trendsetter and when the design of the bottle changed I thought it was a great move but this thin plastic tub has got me on the fence with this direction.

As I was reading email last week I came across one from Cold River Soap Works and just took a peek and what he had going on and I found something I’ve never seen before but I’m sure it been out for a while sheep milk shaving soap called Schapnmelk. If you read the description you find they are paying homage to their dutch heritage. This soap is made with sheep milk and tallow plus lanolin and shea butter.

This soap is hand-wrapped with a modest label holding its packaging. Easy to remove but when it comes to pucks I never know what to do with them once I’m done so I just leave them in the lathering bowl.

Gillette is watching. Yes, Gillette is watching the wet shaving community and that’s a good thing. Last year Gillette released a Heritage Collectible DE Safety Razor in the classic clamshell case and man did that cause excitement in the community. For me, it was something I had to have and apparently so did many others because it didn’t take long before the SOLD OUT sign was posted on the only outlet selling them which was Amazon. For this to happen so quickly could only signal that there is a need for this kind of thing and I can assure you if Gillette decides to do this with another vintage product this frenzy will happen again.

There comes a point when the soap maker has to improve on his or her base formula. The soap maker always strives to make it the best it could be. When it comes down to it, the scent is only 40% of what makes a great shaving soap. The wet shaving space is growing and with that growth comes new ideas new ways of doing things and for this reason, you must keep improving on your base. If you fail to do so you could wind up closing the doors like we’ve seen so many others do in the past.

This week we have one more razor to test and that’s the Barbasol from Joe Watt. He told me to be careful with this razor it was very aggressive. After he told me I had second thoughts about using it. A few years ago I had a bad experience with using an aggressive razor that nearly ruined my face it took over two weeks and lots of care to get it back to point of doing reviews again. Not a lot of fun I can tell you but I was determined not to miss this opportunity so I used pre-shaving oil and a blade that I had already used for a few weeks which in my mind would allow an aggressive razor to be a little tamer and it worked!

Most people know by now that I find my Occam’s Razor Nano to be one of my go-to razors in my collection. My recent review of the Occam’s Enoch Razor was so disappointing. My disappointment must have shown through the video as well with subscribers reaching out trying to help. Some have suggested a new blade the Schick P-30 Proline Artist Club Style Blades which I ordered and just came in today.

I see many SOTD or shave of the days and recently I’ve seen some around this one particular shaving soap called Excalibur. A Product by Taconic Shave a New York company in the Hudson Vally creating all-natural products and sold by Super Safety Razors. Excalibur comes in a tin and it’s been some time since I've seen tins of shaving soap on the market so that made me even more interested so I ordering one.

The package arrived in a timely fashion. The tin was one of the ones I’ve purchased when I first started in wet shaving. it was a push to close not a screw-on lid. The surprise was inside when it relieved a glycerin puck. Disappointed at first I held the puck close to my nose and man the disappointment faded away.

Enoch Single Edge Razor - Occam's Razor

Company: Occam’s Razor Product: Enoch Single Edge Razor Kickstarter backers are patient people I once waited two years for a razor to arrive and when it did it needed to be replaced. That being said anyone who knows my YouTube channel knows how much I love the Occam’s Razor Nano and when they announced the new Enoch Single Edge Razor I just jumped to attention and put my order in and have been waiting ever since. Well, finally, it has arrived. In the box came loads of extra goodies an alum block, Shaving soap (unscented) pre-shave oil and a bottle fragrance oil for the soap. Not sure why the just did give you the scented soap because they only supplied one scent for it. After thinking about this I guess they just wanted to promote sales of the available scents they offer.
